Ravioli Me Away - 'Living Is A Myth' out now!

-->
Afternoon one and all!

Happy days for Upset The Rhythm as today is a new release day! Ravioli Me Away’s impressive new album entitled Living Is A Myth makes its way out in the world. Ravioli Me Away are Sian Dorrer, Rosie Ridgway, Alice Theobald and more recently Monika Krol. Un-defined by genre, Ravioli Me Away’s high-energy music is stylistically schizophrenic. This is social realism soaked through with a heady dose of illusion, idiosyncratic poetics, keyboard flurries and vocal vicissitudes described by the band as “vintage drag-queen Bananarama Youtube footage played with twice the sass and in double time with an incredulous broadband connection reflected in the eyes of a much overworked and downright exhausted Julie Burchill on acid.”

Living Is A Myth is the group’s second album and it’s a tour de force of surreal pop, exploring symptoms of society through its overlapping patterns of ideas and music. Always inventive, clatter-some drumbeats drive the songs onwards, whilst the bass plunges through the fantastical worlds emerging from the woozy pools of formidable keyboard tone. Melody and reiteration are at the forefront, with Dorrer’s wordplay and sublime delivery racing through the songs with effortless style. Their gatefold LP is accompanied by an A1 poster of the band, an orange slice of vinyl and a lyric book with download code. You can buy Living Is A Myth from shops worldwide as of now or from our very own webshop here!

We’ll also be selling copies of Living Is A Myth tomorrow at the remarkable Independent Label Market in Spitalfields. From 11am-6pm Upset The Rhythm will be selling our wares including records, rarities, posters and t-shirts from our stall to all and sundry. We’ll have some brilliant bargains for your Xmas shopping plans and mince pies spilling off the table, so feel free to stop by, say hello, drop off a demo and swig some of our ginger wine from under the table! There are many other labels participating so it’s always a great event, plus lots of local breweries will be serving up pints galore, what’s not to like!

Today we’re also announcing a new concert for our good friend Cian Nugent who will be coming back to London in February. Cian is a mercurial guitar player and composer from Dublin, who combines suburban/coastal blues, traditional musics, late 1960s-'70s singer-songwriters, jazz ambitions, 20th century composition and the Takoma school all into his deeply personal style. In support we are very lucky to have Mega Bog aka Erin Birgy swirling her lush incantations into your ears too. The full show listing concludes this message, tickets on sale now.

We’ll leave you with the full listing of our final show of the year, an Upset The Rhythm Xmas Party coinciding with our 13th birthday too. Taking place on Saturday 17th December at Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club we have a rich pageant of entertainments planned including live performances from Rattle, Ravioli Me Away, Guttersnipe, Blood Sport and Apostille! We hope you can join us!

APOSTILLE is the recording and performing project of Night School honcho Michael Kasparis (of Please and The Lowest Form). Having started as a home-damaged pop music, Apostille has grown into a live-wire synth punk prospect that bridges physicality with emotive bleed. Insistent flickering beats hold down a sturdy framework for Kasparis' clouds of echoed vocals and synth cluster quests. Sometimes Michael's voice soars above the music, hanging their like an apparition, other times the cloaked notes surge forwards, bouncing between distorted handclaps, wonky basslines and oblique incantations to deliriously wondrous effect. Apostille’s debut album ‘Powerless’ was released last year through Night School, look out 2017 as a new album is well on the way!

BLOOD SPORT formed in Sheffield in 2010, and ever since the trio have forged an arresting sound practice from within the city’s industrious art/music community. Their blistering guitar dynamics and pointed-yet-pointillist lyrics meshing into rough-house, techno-gilded polyrhythms, with an untrammelled urgency pervading their tightly wound sound and all that surrounds and informs it. Now the band is set to surge and attack. 2016 will see the fruition of a year’s work in both the live and recorded realms, with new record Axe Laid To The Root released on Blast First Petite following three EPs and a strong debut LP Life In Units, all released on DIY labels – Tye Die Tapes, the band’s own Hybrid Vigour Records and via The Audacious Art Experiment, the record-release wing of the independent arts hub they co-run in Sheffield. Blood Sport have a relentless, heavily structuralist live show, a wall of noise and rhythm delivered with ferocious intensity, girding and grinding the audience into movement. With a background playing squats, raves, art happenings and clubs, the band has increasingly sequenced their set for the dancefloor.

GUTTERSNIPE are a Leeds drums/guitar duo who dive straight into a cauldron of hellish improv-skronk, paint-stripping abstract noise and nightmarishly deconstructed sonic catharsis – imagine the esoteric mayhem of Angel Blood combined with the venue-destroying psychic power of early Boredoms and Naked City, and you ain’t even close. Comprising the duo of Xylocopa Violacea and Bdallophytum, if Guttersnipe don’t blow away your cobwebs, nothing will.

RAVIOLI ME AWAY are Sian Dorrer, Rosie Ridgway and Alice Theobald and more recently, have recruited Monika Kroll as an intermittent member. Un-defined by genre, Ravioli Me Away’s high energy, dangerously ambitious and delusional jazzy-post-pop-punk-hip-funk sound with stylistically schizophrenic motifs span all-known past, present and future human cultures and sub-cultures. This is social realism soaked through with a heady dose of fantasy, idiosyncratic poetics, keyboard flurries and vocal vicissitudes described as “vintage drag-queen Bananarama Youtube footage played with twice the sass and in double time with an incredulous broadband connection reflected in the eyes of a much overworked and downright exhausted Julie Burchill on acid.” This November, RMA will release their second album, ‘Living is a Myth’ with Upset The Rhythm.

RATTLE are a Nottingham based duo, focusing almost exclusively on drums and more drums, beneath a delicate overlay of vocal harmonies and percussive effects. Formed by Katharine Eira Brown (also of Kogumaza) and Theresa Wrigley (also of Fists), Rattle began as an experiment in crafting rich songs and melody using drums and voice alone. Their music weaves and intertwines post-punk, minimalism and experimental rock, through off-kilter rhythms, patterns and counter melodies. Often starting by picking out the ghost notes from the drums to develop a melody, the song then reveals itself in rounds and harmonies with layer upon layer of rhythm and vocal, lending a choral feel to some of the tracks. Rattle effortlessly blend the avant-garde with irresistible melodies and hypnotic drum beats, using rhythm and harmony to create a refreshing sound that is utterly new - a pretty rare feat these days when we’re saturated with so much music. Their live performances are at once hypnotic, monastic and danceable, plus their debut self-titled album was released this Summer on Upset The Rhythm and I Own You.

Huge thanks to all of you who came out to see our Kristin Hersh concerts this week. Have a fantastic weekend, thanks for reading!

CIAN NUGENT

Saturday 11 February
The Islington, 1 Tolpuddle Street, Angel, N1 0XT
7.30pm | £7 | http://www.wegottickets.com/event/382844

CIAN NUGENT is a mercurial guitar player and composer from Dublin, Ireland. Cian combines personal passions, such as suburban/coastal blues, traditional musics, late 1960s-'70s singer-songwriters, jazz ambitions, 20th century composition and the Takoma school into a deeply personal style. New album, ‘Night Fiction’ is Cian Nugent's third album but his first taking on the role of singer-songwriter. Where his previous two albums: 2013's ‘Born With The Caul’ and 2011's ‘Doubles’ saw him exploring extended guitar based instrumentals with his band, The Cosmos, here he has reigned things in and focused his songwriting skills. Guitar fans, do not fear, there is still plenty of soloing and fingerpicking here. With 7 songs both solo and with his band, this album amalgamates everything Cian has done up to this point and reveals a more broad palate of influences, including The Velvet Underground, Richard Thompson, Television, Neil Young, John Lennon, Fred Neil, etc. Cian will perform this show as a trio showcasing lots of songs from his recent album,‘Night Fiction’, out now on Woodsist.

Kristin Hersh shows in London this week!

Greetings all!

This Wednesday and Thursday we’ve got two very special nights planned at St John on Bethnal Green with the incomparable Kristin Hersh. Kristin has such a singular, powerful voice and songwriting vision, shining like a jewel through all her work. She will be treating us to two whole evenings in her company, sharing tales, songs and reading from her books throughout each night from 8.15pm. Full details on both of these rare and unique concerts follow, although please note we only have tickets left now for the Wednesday show. Full details and ticket links can be discovered below.

Also touring soon are Nottingham’s Rattle, our favourite double-drummers, taking out their hypnotic songs on the road with The Julie Ruin and Sleaford Mods. Here is the tour poster so you can acquaint yourselves with the dates (from Lille to Glasgow) and hopefully see them perform when they arrive and erupt into rhythm in your climes.

Today we’re also announcing two new shows for 2017! The first takes place on February 4th for Australian singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Carla dal Forno. Her new album on Blackest Ever Black is a triumph of plain-speaking pop and astral tones, longing for adventure and an unquiet life. Carla will be playing at The Islington for us, supported by Gross Net, tickets now onsale!

The second event we announced today celebrates the 20th anniversary of Milky Wimpshake’s debut album entitled ‘Bus Route To Your Heart’. Milky Wimpshake hatched out of the Slampt Underground arts umbrella in Newcastle Upon Tyne in the early 1990’s and have been serving up love songs for punks ever since. March 4th is the date for your diaries, get that highlighter pen out, how time flies (in your face)!

One last thing before we go, this week we confirmed that Upset The Rhythm will be releasing a new version of Terry's 7" from earlier this year, the excellent '8 Girls' EP! Now that the Aarght version is long sold out, the band have asked us to press this one up on transparent vinyl and house it in a reverse board card sleeve with new artwork featuring a giant man-made lake and Terry post-swim! Pre-order link is up and active here: http://upsettherhythm.bigcartel.com/

Upcoming London shows for Tim Presley and Kristin Hersh, plus Deerhoof concert and Xiu Xiu album announced!

Good evening!

Industrious times for us at Upset The Rhythm so far this week! On Monday we had our minds blown into myriad dimensions by Horse Lords. Then, on Tuesday we were over the supermoon to announce a one-off UK show next year for Deerhoof! Taking place on Monday 6 February at Village Underground, Deerhoof are set to stun us all again with their never-the-same-twice thrill-ride of a live show. Tickets for this concert are onsale now (and selling fast), whilst the Hoof are presently touring mainland Europe with Red Hot Chili Peppers no less, yes really! Strange times afoot, well ahoof at least!

Then yesterday came along and we announced that we’ll be releasing the new album by Xiu Xiu, out February 24th, entitled FORGET. We've worked with Xiu Xiu ever since our fourth show way back in 2004 (Needles wine bar, flashbacks, oh yeh!). They’re one of our most favourite groups, endlessly imaginative and inventive, so it's a real dream-come-true scenario for us! Check out the first track from the record called 'Wondering' - it is staggering synth pop at its best, a total heart-quake.

Our pre-order for FORGET is also now open, including a clear/blue swirl LP option that is strictly limited to our mailorder! The same pre-order link also has a close up of the magnificent calligraphic cover art and the full tracklisting detailed!!

In terms of upcoming shows, we’re getting very near our winter hibernation now, but we still have time for a few corking events to see the year off in style! On Saturday night at The Lexington we have songsmith-extraordinaire Tim Presley of White Fence in town performing songs from his brand new Drag City album Wink. Tim’s new album has been described as sounding like “ Television tackling an obstacle course” and we can’t think of a more perfect summing up. Cate Le Bon contributed to the writing and recording of the album and their combined high-wire songwriting here is addictive. In support we have majestic folk-rock from The Wharves and an exclusive set from Alex Dingley, newly signed to Tim Presley’s label Birth Records. Amps on from 8.30pm, tickets £10 on the door from 7.30pm!

If that wasn’t enough, next week we also have two very unique nights at St John on Bethnal Green planned with the incomparable Kristin Hersh. Kristin has such a singular, powerful voice and vision, we’ve been eagerly looking forward to this double show for quite some time! Kristin will be treating us to two whole evenings in her company, sharing tales, songs and reading from her books throughout each night from 8pm. Full details on both of those very special shows follow, although please note we only have tickets left now for the Wednesday show. Read on for all you need to know to be in the know…

Saturday 19 November
The Lexington, 96-98 Pentonville Rd, Angel, N1 9JB
7.30pm | £10 |

TIM PRESLEY is a man in a glass booth, grabbing at scraps of paper blown at his windscreen as if they were of the greatest value. They're actually of the only value. And we grin in delight in his twist and tumult; in this process, he's assembling his tunes in essential fashion, rolling around in the dust of his Id-bowl, then reordering the scrambled head-events into a barrage of phrases and stages, flickering through disembodied and re-embodied moments, held together by Tim's inviolable belief in the song progression underneath. The tension is unbreakable, a thin plastic slip, as he intones upon a maze of high wild mercury stings. On the cover of his new album on Drag City, you see a bare chest and bits of bodies sketched in ragged lines of black and white. Inside, in full calor, we find Tim Presley. The dark force behind White Fence, Drinks, Hair and Darker My Love stepping into the solo light with 'The WiNK'. When you tune in to 'The WiNK', it takes a couple minutes for you to hear a word. But then it takes only one line until "and then you die," uttered in a voice of mottled, throaty horror, as if ghosts that haven't yet shown themselves are advancing through walls. Working with the creative team of producer Cate Le Bon, drummer Stella Mozgawa, and engineer Samur Khouja, Tim's located the corners of a perfect square, with their creativity and truth crafting unique parts to function as songs within songs, giving the tunes double-jointed features that extend their original intentions. The Presley guitar hand has a powerful, yet quicksilver touch, with metallic brilliance always, especially in rhythm figurations, where it wrings chords out like panic signals, highlighting 'Can You Blame', 'Long Bow', 'Underwater Rain' and 'Clue' (to name a few), and a cover version of Willie "Loco" Alexander's 'Kerouac' (nod and a wink!), where a smooth and steadfast lyric melody is supplanted by a throw of broken guitar and shards of keys. Throughout 'The WiNK', Tim's tone is thin and princely, connecting the dots sideways and backwards to align and make the image emerge.

ALEX DINGLEY traveled from West Wales' Llansteffan to California's West Coast to make his forthcoming album, Beat The Babble, with Tim Presley, Cate Le Bon and Samur Khouja. He took it on the road supporting Le Bon on her May UK tour and early next year Presley will release it on Birth Records.
http://www.dingleydingley.com/

THE WHARVES combine gracefully minimal psyche-rock with fuzzed out folk. Their songwriting remains consistently rich, largely due to the startling harmonies of Gemma Fleet (bass) and Dearbhla Minogue (guitar) that bond together each song. They invoke the reverberated spook of 60s girl groups, the mid-fi guitar crunch of Kim Deal's The Amps, the vocal flavours of The Roches and the narrative and structural panache of 70s progressive folk. Marion Andrau's thunderous drumming drives through these compositions, ensuring the wealth of disparate influences remain focused and celebratory. Brand new album, Electa, builds on last year's 'Naz' 7" on Upset the Rhythm, refining their distinctive sound with increasingly notable elements of heavy rock and folk. Three part vocal harmonies remain staple to the format, underpinning their progressive instrumental step-up.
