UPSET THE RHYTHM: Protomartyr tomorrow in London and Daniel Wakeford next week!

Lots of exciting things afoot here at Upset The Rhythm! This week we’ve released a new video by Terry for their acoustic ripper Hot Heads, taken from their brand new album released earlier this month. Featuring line-dancing, lipstick and convertibles, it’s a heel dig weave into Aussie cowboy culture, draw the curtains, dim the lights and enjoy:

We’ve also just announced a very rare London performance from Kristin Hersh at St John on Bethnal Green on November 24^th. From life as the front person for 4AD’s Throwing Muses through the 80’s and 90’s, to the solo career that began with 1994’s ‘Hips and Makers’, to her power trio 50FootWave and her new career as an author of memoirs ‘Paradoxical Undressing’ and ‘Don’t Suck, Don’t Die’, Kristin never stops creating wonderful things. ‘An Evening with Kristin Hersh’ will include readings and songs from works spanning her entire career. If that wasn’t already enough plates spinning on sticks, tomorrow we also have Protomartyr and The Pheromoans both playing for us at Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club. There will be bucket-loads of post-punk sprawl and musings on the mundane to go around from 7.30pm, plus we will have some tickets available on the door. PROTOMARTYR play a taut, austere rock that's been incubated in a freezing Detroit warehouse littered with beer cans and cigarette butts and warmed occasionally by space heaters. Short songs made for short practices, and the band learned quickly not to waste time. Despite the cold, Protomartyr emerged with a sound that is idiosyncratic but relatable, hooky but off-kilter. With respect to the local predecessors, this isn't the primitive stomp of The Dirtbombs or The Stooges' greasy roar. Punk works, kind of, even if it leaves the hardcore kids confused. Post-punk suggests something too retro; indie rock, something too precious. What Protomartyr is, is "stuck between the cracks." If that's the case, though, they aren't alone. Protomartyr's economical rock elicits comparisons to possible antecedents like Pere Ubu or The Fall as well as local contemporaries like Frustrations or Tyvek (whose frontman Kevin Boyer played bass in an early iteration of Protomartyr). Singer Joe Casey's dry declarative snarl serves as a reliable anchor, granting his bandmates (guitarist Greg Ahee, drummer Alex Leonard and bassist Scott Davidson) the opportunity to explore textures and reinforce the rhythm section. This is never more apparent than on the band's excellent new LP on Hardly Art, 'The Agent Intellect'.

THE PHEROMOANS are a six-piece experimental rock band from the South East of England who deal in a deadpan DIY music. Married to the mundane yet surreal reportage of our lives, their music manages to address the truly restless boredom and absurdity of everyday life. The Pheromoans write songs for the end of the queue, songs that prowl the periphery, songs that stand up on the bus and stare out through the window, blasted through with brilliant sprawling sunshine. Over the last nine years the band have released a slew of records, including numerous EPs, 7"s, mini-albums and LPs through labels as diverse as Night People, Convulsive, Sweet Rot, Monofonus Press, Clan Destine and Upset The Rhythm. These recordings largely focused on a ramshackle, wayward rock ethic, underpinned by lyricist Russell Walker's dry, observational musings that tread an almost diary-like path throughout the songs. Brand new album ‘I’m On Nights’ was just released through Alter and features the band stalking into a world of drum machine clicks, spaced-out keyboard ditties and ennui-soaked rhymes.

DANIEL WAKEFORD is a charismatic and honest individual, bringing his unique brand of pure and ecstatic pop to audiences across the UK this Summer. As a singer-songwriter from the UK’s burgeoning learning disabled music scene, Daniel Wakeford lives in Brighton and writes songs about his life and things he loves, from family to friends, to bad feelings and Beethoven. With this debut tour planned by Constant Flux, Daniel will be promoting his new album, ‘The Songs of Gigs’, in accessible venues to integrated audiences with some of the best bands in the alternative music scene.

Daniel has been writing and recording music since 2009. Working alongside musician Tom Cook, Daniel brings lyrics and a melody to him every Friday and within an hour and a half a song will be created. Using this approach Daniel has amassed an impressive back catalogue, in excess of sixty songs. Ten of these songs have been taken to Metway Studios in Brighton, re-recorded, given the time and attention they deserve and compiled to create his first album proper, ‘The Songs Of Gigs’. Daniel in recent years has also gained a cult following in mainstream culture due to his show-stealing appearances on Channel 4’s ‘The Undateables’. His charisma shone through in the episodes he appeared in and that same charm inhabits all of his songs. Daniel’s new album is out now through Carousel, the learning disability arts organisation that supports him as an artist, check it out!

DOG CHOCOLATE sound like a crowded room but are actually four individuals from London. Having played in many other bands including Yeborobo, Limn and Gasp! Cracking Eggs, united they recognise Dog Chocolate as their one true love. Abandoning notions of elegance, cred and professionalism they embrace the ramshackle, instant and fun, capturing a vivid spontaneity with their music. Their sound is a shabby, fast, over-excited ball of wet fur falling down the stairs, knocking over plant pots along the way and staining the carpet. With an average song time of 2 minutes, Dog Chocolate are on to the next treat before fully digesting the last. Chewing up bits of punk, post-punk, noise and pop, Matthew and Robert's guitars race around each other like wasps, pitch-shifting and phasing all over the place while Jono's rolled-up-newspaper drums chase them round the room. The band's debut album 'Snack Fans' was released earlier this year by Upset The Rhythm.
