SLEAFORD MODS and PLEASE this week!

Hello all!
Two shows coming up this week for you. Tomorrow at the Old Blue Last we have the equally irrascible/wonderful SLEAFORD MODS performing/venting for us, with THE PHEROMOANS and SPOILS & RELICS both in support. Whilst Thursday sees us head to the Dalston Victoria to spend a noisy, kinetic and thrilling Halloween with PLEASE, API UIZ and ARNAUD RIVIERE. Read on for everything you need to know, tickets will be available on the door for both shows, thanks for reading and for attending our Nate Young show last weekend too!

SLEAFORD MODS
THE PHEROMOANS SPOILS & RELICS
Wednesday 30 October
Old Blue Last, 38 Great Eastern Street, Shoreditch, EC2A 3ES
8pm | £6.00 | TICKETS

SLEAFORD MODS are the product of Britain's harsh reality. "You've got to be able to sell yourself ,so I stuck my life on eBay.  £ 25 mate". Sleaford Mods make aggro punk poetry that sounds like the bastard child of John Cooper Clarke’s Beasley Street grown up on hard knocks, rave culture and the Wu-Tang Clan. Jason Williamson is the voice: a big man with an angry face, used to be one of that “door-swings-open, swagger-to-the-bar-crew” but now grown older and wiser. His delivery is venomous, confrontational, but often funny and delighting in twists of language: eyeballing the “scaly-faced booze pricks” and the geezers with their “concrete dagger swaggers”. True Allan Sillitoe heritage and the artistic proof that, outside of the The Cameleon Pub, Notthingham will always be the wrong side of the river Styx. Their new LP Austerity Dogs was just released through the Harbinger Sound label and it sounds amazing!
THE PHEROMOANS are a six piece experimental rock band from the South East of England who deal in a deadpan DIY music. Wedded to the mundane, surreal reportage of our lives as reflected in the media, their music manages to address the truly restless boredom of everyday life. These are songs for the back of the queue, songs from underneath the ergonomic desk, a glimpse through the commuter window, blasted through with brilliant suburban sunshine. Over the last three years the band have released a slew of releases, including numerous EPs, 7"s and three albums through labels as diverse as Night People, Convulsive, Sweet Rot, Monofonus Press and their own imprint Savoury Days. These releases, along with their recent album on Upset The Rhythm 'Does This Guy Stack Up?' focus on a ramshackle, wayward rock ethic, underpinned by lyricist Russell Walker's dry, observational musings that tread an almost diary-like pathway through the songs.
SPOILS & RELICS
cast a mutating web of feedback, choral echoes and lo-fi loops of various howling, rattling found sounds, settling gently into certain texture combinations before testing the stasis through jolts of pitch bend or slow fades into somewhere else. It’s a real nightmare collage: one minute it’s a blast of screaming electronics, like someone tampering with the cockpit controls, and the next it’s tornado of factory noise and alien sex. Musique concrete for the mind’s darker, more paranoid recesses, with a gorgeously sparse latter half of noise squeals fed through some sort of intercom.

Halloween Spooktacular...
PLEASE
API UIZ
ARNAUD RIVIERE
Thursday 31 October
Dalston Victoria, 451 Queensbridge Road, Dalston, E8 3AS
8pm | £5.00 | TICKETS

PLEASE are a trio comprised of duelling guitarists and an activated drummer. Together the threesome offer up ramshackle rhythms and trippy aerobic guitars played alongside unmannered vocals. Delivered with the heady rush you'd expect of punk, Please race 60's garage slap and wrong-footed prog through an obstacle course. Please tap into a rich vein of collective celebration manifest in the hypnotic patterns of strings swirling around the Maypole, popular vaudeville’s raucous call and response, the gaudy splashes of colour in the death-wish incarnations of the funfair, and the uplifting DIY happening where hegemony busting attitudes are nourished with lovely music and homemade cakes. They have a debut 10" on Ouse and a split LP on Upset The Rhythm available now!
API UIZ are instrumental rock fire gods from France. They have a constant energy, where an unclassifiable rock guitarist leads the way without effects or debauchery, whilst the rhythm section, without flinching, find themselves just as gone. Favourites of THE EX, Api Uiz's hectic rhythms similarly defy expectations.
ARNAUD RIVIERE
specialises in amazingly broken electronics and weirdo junk noise. From Paris, Riviere looks for accidents at every turn, chasing the unrepentant feedback ever onwards.

DESTRUCTION UNIT and NATE YOUNG shows this week!

Hey there!
I trust the Autumn is treating you fairly? We’ve got two opportunities to take a huge thick coat to a sweaty venue this week! Tomorrow we’re extremely excited to have DESTRUCTION UNIT playing for us at Old Blue Last, their brutalized, spaced punk finding company with noise wrangler PUCE MARY. Then on Saturday at Café OTO things get phantasmagoric with NATE YOUNG, GARY WAR and PURPLE PILGRIMS all weighing in with their future modes of weirding musick. Full blurbs below for the info gatherers. This last week we’ve also been busy lining up our new releases for GARY WAR / PURPLE PILGRIMS, WAY THROUGH and SILVER FOX, preorders up, plus you can hear some gems from the treasure trove and some future hits by DOG CHOCOLATE and RAVIOLI ME AWAY in this playlist we made for you discerning peoples.
Thanks for reading and/or listening!
Here’s the rest…

\\\\\\  TOMORROW /////

DESTRUCTION UNIT
PUCE MARY
Wednesday 23 October
Old Blue Last, 38 Great Eastern Street, Shoreditch, EC2A 3ES
8pm | £6.00 | TICKETS

DESTRUCTION UNIT are a band from Arizona. Destruction Unit play loud rock music. Destruction Unit have recorded a long playing record. It is morphine boogie for the 21st century noise addict. A spiritual odyssey of sadomasochistic self-loathing with songs about love and freedom. The world is a sick place and Destruction Unit is it’s medicine. But you better act fast before its as illegal as the black market medicine these guys must have taken to make such a record. This line-up has released several cassettes on their own label Ascetic House, a small run LP, 'Void' on Jolly Dream and have an upcoming limited edition 7-inch on Suicide Squeeze Records. 'Deep Trip' is their first proper studio record, recorded by Ben Greenberg of The Men, Pygmy Shrews and Hubble, and Kyle Keays at Vacation Island in NYC, and mastered by Kris Lapke of Alberich and Josh Bonati, this is brooding American psychedelia, modern psych, debt and war psych. The future of Rock and Roll burning through three twin reverbs and a pound of grass, available now on Sacred Bones.

PUCE MARY is the solo moniker of Danish experimental musician Frederikke Hoffmeier. Through a still relatively short career she has released and performed her way to the be in the top of Scandinavia's current industrial music scene, with vinyl and tape releases on labels such as Second Sleep (IT), Posh Isolation (DK) and Nordisk Klub (DK), a flow of live shows throughout Scandinavia, and collaborators as Dan Johansson and Loke Rahbek. Her own work as Puce Mary is difficult to categorize, while definitely being Industrial music the sound pallet is wide and releases has presented work from clear drones to drum based rhythmic industrial and even nodding towards Power electronics at times.

* Please note: due to an emergency health issue, Pharmakon will unfortunately not be able to play this show. We aim to rearrange a show for Pharmakon at the earliest possible opportunity.

NATE YOUNG
GARY WAR
PURPLE PILGRIMS
Saturday 26 October
Cafe Oto, 22 Ashwin Street, Dalston, E8 3DL
8pm | £8.00 | TICKETS

NATE YOUNG is a founding member of seminal Detroit noise band Wolf Eyes. More recently been honing an equally distinctive solo sound that blends myriad sources from musique concrète, vintage film atmospherics, layered synths and archive library recordings into something thrillingly intense. Summoning up crushingly ominous crepuscular soundscapes and synth-washed phantasmagoria, Young undercuts the brutalism of Wolf Eyes with the kind of ambient dread that conjures images of lost horror soundtracks from the 70's. Minimal analogue synth violence is punctuated by thunder cracks of metal percussion ala the early Akita/Null Merzbow duets, massively doomy beat hypnotics and an atmosphere that's somewhere between the most apocalyptic Throbbing Gristle recordings, Coil's Musick To Play In The Dark, The Conet Project and your favourite Kraut kosmonaut. Young's most recent album 'Blinding Confusion' (out now on NNA Tapes) has the feel of a kind of post-synth electro-acoustic ritual, albeit tied-in with a visionary compositional aesthetic that is a couple of miles beyond your average weird-beard in a basement non-vibe.
GARY WAR has previously served alongside John Maus and Ariel Pink in Haunted Graffiti and also has a burgeoning catalogue of solo material released on Captured Tracks, Spectrum Spools and Knife Slits Water, and Sacred Bones. Gary War makes awesome zonked-out future music oozing with a disembodied soul and draped in heavy drones, unafraid to deploy feedback and thick waves of analogue fuzz for a luciously head-warping effect. War is touring in support of his new split LP on Upset The Rhythm which takes deeper step into a pool of progressive maximal wave and distinctly modern psychedelia.

PURPLE PILGRIMS are an outsider dream pop duo of sisters from Christchurch via Hong Kong. Clementine and Valentine Nixon make delicate, hypnotic vocals hover gently above spectral waves of guitar and exotic abstraction, as subtle beds of rhythm lock step in the distance. The Pilgrims have distilled the mysterious hybrid of shimmering distortion and je ne sais quoi that have long attracted global purveyors of the N.Z. underground into it's absolute purest form. As perfect a soundtrack to observe the latest night transform into the earliest morning as one could ever dream of hearing. Following on from their first lathe cut, Upset The Rhythm will be releasing a split LP with Gary War to coincide with their European tour.

GARY WAR and PURPLE PILGRIMS also begin their UK tour on Saturday with us at Café OTO so it seems like a good time to shout their tour dates from the rooftops here too!

WAY THROUGH - "Imber & Tyneham" VIDEO

Imber and Tyneham are both examples of villages taken over by the MOD during WWII for the war effort. Both were never returned to the original occupants of the villages after the war and persist now as ghost villages of bombed out houses and unexploded debris. 'Imber & Tyneham' by Way Through contrasts the differing fates of both places, with Tyneham becoming a weekend heritage destination amongst a still active army range, and Imber remaining a strictly out of bounds training ground for urban combat. Whilst Tyneham has decayed into a nature reserve with adequate picnic facilities and infoboards, Imber now boasts the eerie addition of a recent housing estate of obliterated concrete houses with corrugated roofs. Both were visited by Way Through in a narrow window of access at the start of the new year when the firing ranges were dormant. The song's lyrics were penned onsite, alongside the collection of field recordings which informed the music and the footage of the resultant video, documenting the uneasy silence of the ruins, the portal-like nature of the destroyed buildings, the often surreal signage and the countless instances of water pouring out of the ground.

'Imber & Tyneham' is taken from Way Through's forthcoming album 'Clapper Is Still' out on Upset The Rhythm on Nov 11th.

ROBEDOOR are the LA-based psychedelic drone dub duo of Alex and Britt Brown (ex-Pocahaunted, Not Not Fun owner). The band have a large discography of cassettes, CDs and LPs dating back to 2005, which includes releases with labels Not Not Fun, Woodsist and Important Records. This is their first European tour since 2006, and will be performing dark and intimate auditory rituals in support of their recent full length album 'Primal Sphere' (Hands In The Dark Records). Born from what the band describes as “the Spring of 2011’s longform, overdrive circuit-scum maze sessions”, the follow-up to the gorgeous 'Too Down To Die' sounds very much like an intentional regression from the future, a  ripping up of rock roots in order to regain a grip on the ragged sound of drone. Robedoor's artistic vision encompases the apocalypse. Describing 'Primal Sphere' as long undead, they recorded the four dancehall canvases by building a caveman midi and banging duct-taped gongs onto a skeleton of primate, subhuman, industrial noise, faithfully recreating the rich resin waste tones of their sinister transe visions: a massive, dark, dense and hazy wall picturing a cataclysm party under a big dark sun.
http://robedoor.tumblr.com/

SAND CIRCLES aka Martin Herterich records for Not Not Fun, specialising in airy, spiralling ambience, total revelations sounding like Andy Stott fed through a kaleidoscope, sludgy beats and faded chords that in themselves sound like classic Boards of Canada. Sand Circles taps into slowed-down midnight pop a la Glass Candy/Chromatics, narcotic disco jams and treated Motor City strings - all bursting with that rich tape saturation. Sand Circles is touring Europe with close friends Robedoor throughout October.

BEN NASH weaves a tapestry of sound that is as warm and welcoming as it is timeless in character. Vocal drones, singing bowls, motorik loops and epic guitars are all keen elements of his sound; capturing fleeting emotions within his electro-acoustic net. Nash's debut album 'The Seventh Goodbye' (on Aurora Borealis) was a collage of so many layers, patterns and textures, that it became as dazzling as the plummage of the finest peacock in paradise. Musical elements as diverse as folk, raga, Eastern percussion, drone, prog and noise coalesce on the record. Last year he released 'Oh Lordy Me (My Heart Is Wandering Again)' for Blackest Rainbow, a record which saw him drop his guitar and create an entire LP using an iPad with the Tenori-on app. Perhaps an unexpected turn, but then this year has been a pretty interesting one for Ben, returning to playing live after a long hiatus, surprising people by playing live in Sheffield and London for separate sets with Mehdi and Solange from Natural Snow Buildings as a trio. New album, 'The Mineral Victim' is available now also on Blackest Rainbow.

NO AGE are forever cascading forward in a positive direction, gleefully instinctive, erupting out of your speakers, blasting away the clouds above the smoggy cityscape to reveal a solar flaring sun. With an ecstatic force bubbling around and beyond their music, they release contagious energy like they’re main-lining a field full of whirring wind turbines, while tuned into an ancient celestial power source. No Age is the duo of Dean Spunt and Randy Randall, they are on a constant journey to explore the furthest reaches of sound. They set out with one particular rule in mind: To write songs that they would be psyched to listen to. On a first listen, discovering each new dose of their alchemy is exhilarating, they produce perfectly crafted songs, underpinned by infectious melodies and ear-piercing cacophony. This swirling mix of unstoppable momentum is catapulted into the stratosphere by sweeping bursts of symphonic growls. Their power is enunciated through their ability to take their core of catchy song-writing and expand its emotional influence through tone, structure and noise. With their newly released album 'An Object', their fourth so far, No Age have forgone the straight and narrow route, landing in a strange and unexpected place, feet planted in fresh, fertile soil. This new LP finds Dean Spunt exploding from behind his kit, landing percussive blows with amplified contact mics, 4-string bass guitars, and prepared speakers, as well as traditional forms of lumber and metal. Meanwhile, Randy Randall corrals his previously lush, spastic, sprawling arrangements into taught, refined, rats’ nests.
http://noagela.org/

ED SCHRADER'S MUSIC BEAT formed in 2009 when Devlin Rice (also of Nuclear Power Pants) joined Ed for a one-off show. The band formed quite unintentionally. Ed was invited to play a rave of all things and, before almost deciding to opt out, decided to join forces with his roommate Devlin for the performance. Playing as a duo, the show was magic - Ed doing manic extended versions of his songs, crooning to a glow stick friendly crowd under a full moon in September, while Devlin raged on his bass alongside making for a winning combination that was too good to leave as a one night affair. This mind meld took the left field paranoid pop that Ed was composing and added a powerful low end power chug from the jug of eternal rock, raising the whole project to a more visceral live experience. Since then the band has done considerable touring with acts such as Future Islands, Lightning Bolt and Dan Deacon, and really whipped up some enthusiasm based on their minimal and real rock vision. The band issued a 7" on Load Records called 'Sermon / Rats' and an album 'Jazz Mind' on Upset The Rhythm last year which encapsulated the band's vision of pop-inflected, stripped down rawk to its purest form; rhythm and personality.
http://edschradersmusicbeat.bandcamp.com/

"DOG CHOCOLATE that's the name of the band I wanna be in!" And so, a couple of experimental practices later, we realised we didn't need bass, but we did need drums, but not many. We didn't need to repeat stuff that didn't need saying more than once, and actually we didn't need to try to do anything!!! But we just did it (quote Yoda, insert picture of Honey Boo Boo Child doing thumbs up)! If you put a bar of dog chocolate next to a bunch of bars of normal chocolate, it might look the same but it ain't the same, it was made by dogs!! Look out for a forthcoming split LP with Dog Chocolate and Ravioli Me Away released by Upset The Rhythm soon!

ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER aka Daniel Lopatin has been crafting his esoteric sound world for over five years now. Part hypnotic and warm, part dystopian and disorientating, his work - taking elements of drone, ambient and experimental music - has manifested in a slew of acclaimed releases, a collaborative LP with Tim Hecker and side projects, including synth-funk outfit Ford & Lopatin/Games. This show will mark the London debut for OPN's impressive new AV show in support of his new album 'R Plus 7', out on Warp Records. Lopatin's debut on Warp contains many familiarities for listeners who have followed the acclaimed electronic music composer’s development over the last five years, however the new record is a major departure from previous work. Lopatin’s experimental inclinations lurk behind the scenes while the music itself comes as close as Lopatin has ever gotten to anything resembling traditional song structure. 'R Plus 7' is disruptive and hypnotic in equal measure, and the fun of it lies in trusting Lopatin as he guides you past (and often through) a succession of walls and mirrors.
http://www.pointnever.com/

SCULPTURE are an audiovisual performance duo from London – electronic music producer, Dan Hayhurst, and animator, Reuben Sutherland. Together they create a kind of unstable modular collage with rhythm and spontaneity; Sutherland ‘DJs’ with home-made zoetropic discs, intricate concentric rings of illustrated frames projecting fragments of looping images at 33, 45 and 78 rpm, and pre-Edisonian imaging technology combined with a digital video camera. Hayhurst deploys found tapes, lo-fi electronics, computer programming, and analogue noise across 1⁄4” tape loops, backed with hardware samplers, a cassette walkman and a CDJ deck. All this comes together as an amalgam of found sounds & imagery, Plunderphonics and ancient electronic music recalling the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, mixed hands-on on the spot.

THE HOLYDRUG COUPLE have done a lot of growing since their first release with Sacred Bones Records in 2011. The “couple,” consisting of Ives Sepúlveda and Manuel Parra recorded 'Noctuary' in Santiago, Chile. They put together a home studio and recorded the entire album themselves, from start to finish. Feeling that no one else had been able to capture their sound, Ives decided to take a risk and produce and engineer the album on his own. After four months of obsessively working and barely leaving the house, Ives emerged with a final product of which the band is truly proud. All of this hard work has manifested in a more elaborated, astral sounding album than its predecessor, 'Awe'. While 'Awe' and their 'Ancient Land' EP had a bluesier, woodsy sound, 'Noctuary' plays out like a slow motion 60’s beach party dream that you never want to wake from. This is not your typical motorik beat kraut album; rather it sounds more like a breezy take on Love or Beau Brummels. The way that songs like “Willoweed” and “Paisley” flow seamlessly into one another, it is easy to see how listeners will become entranced by this new, dream-like world that The Holydrug Couple have created. These two stand-out tracks, as well as “Follow Your Way” really exemplify the growth of this band and signify the new direction they’re headed in. This show marks their London debut, following on from their appearance at Liverpool's International Festival Of Psychedelia!

GLOSS REJECTION write fuzzed-out eerie anthems for the clatter punk enthusiasts. Guitars make spiky turns on their quest to circumnavigate the rhythms pinned down by the solid drumming and hushed vocal reverence. Check out their self-titled EP, recorded at Sound Savers right now at the following link, it's captivating stuff.
